How-to: Seven Windows 7 Tips

Windows 7 tipsWindows 7 is three years old, give or take. Yet there is still a wealth of features that huge numbers of users don’t know exist. Not to mention a few trumpeted ‘highlights’ that fall flat.

  • Here follow seven assorted Windows 7 tips. AJS
  • To open another window of the same program (assuming more than one instance of the program can be run), hold SHIFT and click the Taskbar icon. You can also click the middle button on your mouse if you have a 3-button mouse!
  • Adjust display. You can fine-tune the options for ClearType Text Tuner and Display Color Calibration. From the Start menu, click Run, and then type
    cttune.exe or dccw.exe.
  • Access frequently used folders. Right-click the Windows Explorer icon on the Windows 7 Taskbar to access your most frequently used folders.
  • Sneak peak. Hover your mouse pointer over a Taskbar program icon to peek at the open documents. For a scale view of a document, hover the pointer over the file’s thumbnail preview.
  • ‘Instant recall’. Quickly find most recently opened files. Hover your mouse pointer over a program name, or right-click an icon on the Taskbar – a Windows 7 Jump List appears, displaying the documents you used most recently and most often.
  • Windows 7 Aero Shake does clear the inactive windows from your desktop if you hover the mouse pointer over the window title bar, click, and shake the
window from side to side. Repeat the procedure to shake everything back into view. This was a daft implementation of a good idea. There’s a better way to clear inactive windows – see next post.
  • (DON’T) Write to disk faster. With ReadyBoost, you supposedly can use multiple flash drives for caches larger than 4Gb, add accessible memory and reduce the time it takes to write to disk. I HAVE YET TO FIND ANYONE WHO NOTICES ANY DIFFERENCE USING THIS.
