Review: Your World – The Culture of Gaming

GamificationEpisode 1 of 2. BBC World Service.

“Aleks Krotoski examines how computer gaming is affecting our culture – computer or videogames have been around for 40 years, but the wider cultural implications have tended to be glossed over in favour of discussion of the size of the gaming economy and concerns about games’ social impact.

New technology and the spread of games to phones, tablets and PCs are creating millions of new users.”

Back in her native US, Dr Aleks (presenter of The Digital Human) examines the immersive possibilities of this uniquely-interactive medium, interviewed experts including the curator at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, now hosting a major exhibition of gaming art.

The BBC does a pretty good job as a public broadcaster. Your World isn’t usually a technology thread, on a World Service Channel that usually wears its’ oh-so politically correct, right-on liberal credentials on its’ sleeve.  The Culture of Gaming is a nicely understated (if occasionally a bit dull) exploration devoid of sensationalism, hyperbole or indeed anyone getting over-excited. It is a slightly academic look at gaming culture, but it’s factual and approachable even to the non-gamers, at whom it is squarely pitched.

First broadcast in August 2012, this show is still doing the rounds of the BBC world Service broadcasting and has over a year left to play on BBC iPlayer.
